Nederland's info center seeks volunteers

NEDERLAND - Nederland's visitor center has reopened for the summer, with a new concessionaire, new ways for businesses in the mountain town to get involved, and a need for volunteers to answer questions.

People wishing to volunteer to work at the center are being invited to an information session from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at Salto Coffee Works, 112 E. Second St. Those unable to attend can send an email request to Katrina Harms at katrina@katrinaharms.com. Training is provided, but a friendly attitude and knowledge of the area is required and some experience with money is preferred. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and 10 percent off merchandise sold at the center.

Visitor center volunteers will answer tourists' questions about the area's mining history, local businesses, outdoor recreation and events such as the annual Frozen Dead Guy Days.

Volunteers who staff the center will be under the direction of a Nederland business, Dog House Inc., which was awarded the operations contract by the town's board of trustees, which submitted a request for proposals and evaluated the entries.

The information center, which resumed operations May 11, is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.

Businesses in the Peak to Peak Highway corridor are invited to submit rack cards or business cards for the display kiosk, and this year can enter a drawing to be featured in a display at the center. The center's staff will select business names randomly each month; entries can be emailed to info@nederland.org.
