BOULDER - Two Boulder companies, Olomomo Nut Company and The Organic Dish, were selected as two winners for the University of Colorado-Denver Bard Center for Entrepreneurship Business Plan contest.
Olomomo, which won first place, received $10,000, and The Organic Dish, which won second place, received $5,000. The two companies, which were selected from among 76 businesses that submitted plans to the competition, will also receive consulting services.
Olomomo Nut Co. was founded in 2008 by Justin Perkins. The company sells roasted nuts coated with exotic spice and flavor blends at Boulder County Farmers' Markets and online. The two brothers intend to distribute their specialty nuts to coffee shops across the U.S.
The Organic Dish is an online service that provides ready-to-cook organic meals and dinner kits through local pickup and delivery as well as national shipping. The company began when founders Beckie and Toby Hemmerling decided to change their eating habits to include more fresh ingredients and whole grains and to eliminate processed foods, preservatives, caffeine and sugar from their diets.
"It's rare that one, let alone two, natural and organic companies are chosen in a contest that is usually dominated by technology startups," Justin said.
