A total of 1,776 foreclosures were filed in Boulder and Broomfield counties in 2009 - setting an all-time year record and jumping 37 percent from a year ago.

The foreclosure filings are showing no sign of slowdown. December's 160 new filings to close out the year set a new record high for the month.

Foreclosures typically are filed after borrowers are 75 to 90 days late on their mortgage payments. Those homes haven't necessarily been repossessed yet, but the figures are a good indication of how many households are struggling to pay their bills.

This year's job losses, declining home prices and maturing adjustable-rate mortgages likely contributed to the increasing foreclosures.
