BOULDER - Sustainable Travel International, a nonprofit based in Boulder, has launched two sustainable travel programs: TravelGreen and the Sustainable Tourism Eco-certification Program.
Hotels using the TravelGreen program can sell Green Tags to guests for $1. The tag is equivalent to offsetting 33.6 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, represents 24 kilowatt hours of electricity supplied by wind and solar power, and equates to 100 percent of the energy consumption of one night in a hotel.
The certification program is for hoteliers who want to support environmental conservations and protect cultural heritage. The educational program has an application fee starting at $200.
"These two programs really work hand-in-hand to allow hoteliers to examine their practices and make confident strides toward improving sustainability at their properties," said Brian Mullis, president of Sustainable Travel International.
