BOULDER - The University of Washington has partnered with Boulder-based Intrago Corp. to provide electric bikes for the fall quarter.

Intrago (pronounced Intra-go) Corp. makes electric bikes and scooters that are parked at a charging station and allow a customer to unlock the vehicle with a single key and immediately ride away. The station also logs the rental period and processes payment.

The University of Washington will be supplied with 40 bikes, which will be spread across campus and available to be checked out. Each bike can go 25 to 35 miles on a single charge, and bikes won't be restricted to campus.

The program is being partially funded by a $200,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation as part of a $1 million trip-reduction program.

Founders Dan Sturges and Larry Blankenship, presenters at the Angel Capital Summit in Denver Nov. 13, envision their electric vehicles being used at transit links, on university campuses, corporate campuses, military bases, leisure markets and in planned, urban communities.

"We're putting together an Electric vehicle system with rental by the hour for intra city, intra community transportation needs," Blankenship said. "We offer something no one else has. If you're renting bicycles with automated systems, you don't have much to think about. We needed smarter solutions in mobility."

Sturges founded Global Electric Motorcars, which is now owned by Chrysler.
