DENVER — Colorado’s top officials are celebrating the announcement that a new U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will come to the state, bringing an estimated $440 million in economic activity in the next five years.

Gov. John Hickenlooper, Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., and other state leaders met Monday, July 2, at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus at Colfax Avenue and Peoria Street in Aurora to tout the announcement.

The Denver metro area was one of three areas chosen for a new satellite patent office, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. No specific site has been named. The two other metro areas chosen were Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, and San Jose, California. Another new office recently had been announced for Detroit.

Federal officials said in a press statement that the new offices would “create new economic opportunities in each of the local communities.”

Next week, two Department of Commerce officials will travel to each of the newly selected cities to meet with local businesses, entrepreneurs and public officials to discuss the new office openings, according to the announcement.
