Boulder-based Apex Sports Group LLC, maker of the Apex Ski Boot System, was honored for its product innovation and business leadership in the 2012 Entrepreneur Awards sponsored by Colorado-based Something Independent. Twenty-three companies submitted 90-second video pitches of their brand vision, with Apex finishing in the top three for the final prize along with CondorCam and winners of the award, Mountain High Mountaineering.
Longmont-based DigitalGlobe Inc. (NYSE: DGI), a provider of high-resolution earth imagery, was awarded the USGIF Industry Intelligence Award at GEOINT 2012, the nation’s largest intelligence event, in Orlando, Florida, for its work with the Satellite Sentinel Project. Initiated by actor George Clooney with partnerships between the Enough Project, the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and DigitalGlobe, among others, the project calls attention to human rights violations by using satellite imagery to prevent mass atrocities in Sudan and South Sudan before they occur.
The Boulder-based Center for ReSource Conservation has announced the ReWards winners for 2012, honoring participants who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and creative vision toward a more sustainable future. The winners include: Ron Flax, Conservationist of the Year; Elizabeth Nolan and Linda Olsson of Bold Doors Volunteers, Volunteers of the Year; Cheryl Crispi of Lovely Lady Products, Entrepreneur of the Year; Summit Middle School, Youth Conservationists of the Year; and the city of Lafayette, Community Conservation Leaders of the Year.
Broomfield-based metal packaging company Ball Corp. (NYSE: BLL) has won four Can of the Year awards in the annual global contest held by The Canmaker magazine, a prominent industry trade publication. Ball cans received a Gold Award in the 2-Piece Beverage Can category for its 24-ounce Miller Lite Grip can with tactile ink that mimics the feel of an American football, a Gold Award in the Metal Bottles category for its 16-ounce Alumi-Tek bottle for Chaka Ale, a specialty craft beer from Longmont-based Oskar Blues and Indianapolis-based Sun King breweries, a Bronze Award in the 3-Piece Beverage Can category for its throwback steel beverage can made for Churchkey beer, and a commendation in the 3-Piece Food Can category for its gallon-sized oblong Kikkoman soy sauce can featuring flat-sheet printing.
Broomfield-based Omni Financial Services Inc. won the large-business category and Longmont-based Outreach United Resource Center Inc. won the nonprofit category in the Better Business Bureau of Denver/Boulder’s 10th annual Torch Awards for Marketplace Trust.
Deborah Jin, an adjoint professor of physics at the University of Colorado-Boulder and a fellow of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, has been awarded the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science award. She teaches was one of five recipients who each will receive $100,000 at an awards ceremony in Paris next March. She was the only recipient in North America. Jin was cited by the awards jury “for having been the first to cool down molecules so much that she can observe chemical reactions in slow motion, which may help further understanding of molecular processes which are important for medicine or new energy sources.”
