BOULDER - A condom maker with Boulder-style social consciousness has widened its distribution network.

Natural-latex condoms designed by Boulder-based Sir Richards Condom Co. and manufactured in Malaysia, will be sold nationwide in CVS (NYSE: CVS) drug stores and Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) stores, according to a press statement from Sir Richard's.

The national exposure fulfills an ambition its chief executive, Jim Moscou, expressed in November at a CEO Roundtable sponsored by the Boulder County Business Report. "I'm dead on a stick if I just sell to Whole Foods," he said then. "I've got to get to the mass (market), and give them a story."

Kroger, the parent company of King Soopers and City Market grocery stores in Colorado, also owns grocers under the Kroger, Dillon, Fry's Food, Fred Meyer, Ralph's, QFC and Smith's Food and Drug brands.

With the agreement, Sir Richard's products will become available in more than 11,000 locations across the United States and United Kingdom, up from approximately 1,000 in 2012, according to the company.

For every one of its condoms that is purchased, Sir Richard's contributes one to a developing nation to assist in family planning and prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

To date, for instance, Sir Richard's has contributed 1.5 million condoms to Haiti that are distributed primarily through Partners in Health clinics and hospitals. The latest partnerships will help send that figure far higher, according to the company. Sir Richard's launched a Haitian branded condom in hopes that its cultural relevance would promote increased usage. The brand, called KORE and pronounced kore-ay, is a slang term heard in Haiti that translates as "I have your back."

Sir Richard's has a "Condom Tracker" on its website, www.sirrichards.com/web/ui/#tracker, that indicates the number of condoms that have been purchased by customers and donors.

Sir Richard's was founded in 2009. Its latex condoms are free of spermicides, petrochemicals, glycerins and parabens and are vegan certified and approved by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Sir Richard's is headquartered at 1501 Easy Rider Lane, Suite 103, in Boulder.
