Brunton to grow in Boulder and Wyoming

Riverton, Wyoming-based Brunton plans to nearly double its employee base in Gunbarrel to 60 people in the next five years, from the current 40, said Erron Sorensen, company president.
As the company grows, the site in Gunbarrel at 7088 Winchester Circle may take on all North American operations, said Sorensen, whose office is in Gunbarrel. Brunton makes and sells outdoor products such as compasses, batteries and binoculars.
Brunton's compass manufacturing operation in Riverton, Wyoming, also is expected to grow to about 40 people from the current 27 in the same time period, Sorensen said.
Brunton is a subsidiary of Fenix Outdoor AB, traded on the Sweden stock exchange under the stock symbol: FIXB. Other Fenix outdoor brands - better-known in Europe than in the United States - include Primus, Fjallraven, Tierra and Hanwag. Products include sleeping bags, backpacks, tents and hiking boots.
"If we have success here like we have in other countries, we think we can grow significantly in the next few years," Sorensen said.
Brunton's site in Gunbarrel includes a warehouse, its customer service, marketing product management and accounting departments and other related jobs, Sorenson said.
Denver International Airport is much more convenient for Brunton employees who need to travel than Riverton Regional Airport is for Brunton's Wyoming employees, Sorenson said. Two years ago, Brunton employees in Wyoming missed a key industry trade show when the Riverton Regional Airport was snowed in, for example, he said.
Brunton wants to hire a vice president of operations, who would be based in Gunbarrel, as well more customer-service and warehouse workers, Sorenson said. Four people in the Gunbarrel office moved to Boulder from Wyoming in April, but virtually all others in Colorado are new hires, he said.
Fenix's United States operations reported about $23 million in revenue in 2012, Sorensen said.
