Boomtown to launch Connected Device Lab
Last Updated: 17:04 June 27, 2014
The Internet of Things is a concept in which everyday physical objects are connected to the Internet and are able to identify themselves to and communicate with other devices without human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
Allyson Patterson, director of investor relations and employee development at Boulder-based broadband infrastructure provider Zayo Group, made the announcement at Boomtown's inaugural Demo Day held Friday at the Boulder Theater.
At Demo Day the six companies to complete Boomtown's intensive 12-week accelerator program unveiled their products before an audience of investors, the media and the public.
"The fact that two of the six spring 2014 Boomtown companies offer smart, Internet of Things devices is an indicator of what's to come," said Boomtown co-founder and co-director Toby Krout. "The Internet of Things offers huge potential for technology that will make people around the globe smarter, happier and healthier."
In February, the International Data Corp. a technology research firm, predicted that the global Internet of Things market would reach $7.1 trillion by 2020.
"I am incredibly excited to see what comes out of the Connected Device Lab," Krout said. "With students, entrepreneurs, agencies, development shops and others all working together, I have no doubt that this lab will put Boulder on the map as a global leader in the rapidly growing Internet of Things market."
The Connected Device Lab will be based in downtown Boulder and will be accessible to the community and to Boomtown startup teams. The lab is set to open fall 2014.
Boomtown was founded in 2013 by a group of media, marketing and technology veterans, including former Crispin Porter + Bogusky, now CP+B, principal Alex Bogusky. Boomtown aims to discover and support promising Internet, mobile and software startups, primarily in the media, design, marketing and ad tech sectors that use technology or analytics to redefine media and the relationship between people and brands.
