Sun plans job cuts in Broomfield
By Ryan Dionne
BROOMFIELD - Sun Microsystems Inc. plans to lay off 128 people at its Broomfield campus in early January, according to a notice filed with the state.
The cuts are part of the Santa Clara, Calif.-based technology company's October announcement that it plans to eliminate 3,000 jobs companywide during the next 12 months.
Sun officials didn't return phone calls Tuesday, but the notice filed with the state's labor department said most of the layoffs will occur Jan. 3 with the rest by Jan. 17.
The 128 jobs in Broomfield, and one in Colorado Springs, are part of 715 jobs in the U.S. that are included in this round of layoffs.
In January, Sun (Nasdaq:JAVA) announced it would layoff 1,300 employees companywide. Of those, 164 people at its Broomfield site and 31 people at its Louisville site were impacted.
In April, Sun reported having about 3,200 local employees. That month, the company said it was being acquired by Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle (Nasdaq:ORCL) for about $7.4 billion.
Sun shareholders as well as U.S. regulators have approved that deal, but it's awaiting approval by the European Commission.
